ORTHO-BIONOMY -
bodywork that follows your body's lead
Your body is intelligent. It knows how to heal itself, how to find balance, how to let go of what it no longer needs. Most of the time, though, we’re working against that intelligence — pushing through tension, ignoring signals, holding on to patterns that have become so familiar we don’t even notice them anymore. Ortho-Bionomy is different. It’s a hands-on bodywork practice that works with your body’s own wisdom, not against it.
There are no forceful adjustments, no deep digging into muscle, no pain. Instead, through careful positioning and light touch, we create the conditions for your nervous system to recognise what feels comfortable, what feels safe — and from that place of safety, we give your body the ability to reorganise itself. It’s profoundly effective for physical pain, injury recovery, and nervous system regulation. But it’s also transformative for the emotional and energetic patterns we carry in our bodies without realising it.
Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or simply noticing your body feels out of alignment, Ortho-Bionomy offers a path that honours your body’s innate ability to find its way back to ease.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ortho-Bionomy is a hands-on bodywork modality developed in the 1970s by Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, a British osteopath who was looking for a gentler way to help bodies find their own balance.
The core idea is this: your body already knows how to correct itself. It’s got an inbuilt ability to realign, to release tension, to find ease. What I do in a session is position your body in comfortable places, or move your limbs into positions of comfort, and then I get out of the way and let your body do what it naturally wants to do.
You stay clothed the whole time, lying on a massage table, and there’s no pain involved. It’s the opposite of forceful adjustments or deep manipulation. Instead, it’s about creating the conditions for your body to notice what needs to shift and then shift it on its own.
Good question, because they do get lumped together sometimes. Chiropractic and osteopathy often use manipulations and adjustments to fix alignment. Massage focuses on soft tissue and muscle manipulation. Ortho-Bionomy doesn’t do any of that. There’s no forcing, no deep pressure, no trying to fix you from the outside. Instead, I work with your body’s own self-correcting reflexes. I’m essentially offering your nervous system feedback — through gentle positioning and light touch — that says, “This is more comfortable. This is easier.” Your body receives that message and naturally reorganises itself. It’s like the difference between someone pushing you somewhere versus someone gently showing you the door and letting you walk through it yourself.
People come for all sorts of reasons. Some have chronic or acute pain — lower back pain, neck tension, joint stiffness. Some are recovering from an injury and want support that doesn’t involve force or manipulation. Some notice their body feels out of alignment and they want a tune-up. But honestly, one of the most powerful things I’ve noticed is what happens with the nervous system. When your body receives only positions of comfort and gentleness, your nervous system gets the message that it’s safe to relax, to slow down, to let go of the patterns it’s been holding. That alone can shift so much — tension you didn’t even realise you were carrying, stress held in your body, emotional patterns that live in your muscles. The body releases these things at its own pace, without you having to think or talk your way through it.
Absolutely, and I often recommend it. Hypnotherapy works through the mind — it addresses the unconscious, behaviour patterns, and emotions. Ortho-Bionomy works through the physical body. They’re different doorways into the same goal: helping you feel more whole. Sometimes I’ll suggest bodywork first, especially for people who feel resistant to “mind work” or who are carrying so much that talking about it feels impossible. Ortho-Bionomy can release emotional and energetic patterns without you ever needing to think or talk them through, which can be exactly the entry point some people need before they’re ready for anything else. Others come for both because they want to work on every level — body, mind, and everything in between.
When you arrive, we’ll sit down together and I’ll take a bit of your history — any surgeries, current issues, what’s been going on for you. Sometimes I’ll watch you walk to see how your body moves. Then you’ll get onto the massage table, either face up or face down depending on what’s most comfortable, and we’ll begin. I usually start by testing points on your body to see what’s sore, tight, or tender, then I’ll gently move you into a position that feels easier, and test again to notice what’s changed. Throughout, I’ll check in with you — asking things like “does this feel better, or does that?” — because this whole process is about comfort. There’s no forcing, no digging in. We just keep noticing what your body responds to, and work our way through whatever needs attention, whether that’s your spine, your legs, your neck, or somewhere else entirely.
Sometimes, yes — especially in specific areas. If we’re working on something like a tight IT band, you’ll often notice right there on the table that it’s released. But the fuller picture usually unfolds over the days that follow. Once your body gets the message that it’s safe to let go, it tends to keep adjusting and recorrecting on its own, even after you’ve left the session. So don’t be surprised if you notice shifts a day or two later that you didn’t clock right away.
Comfortable, loose clothing is best. I’ll sometimes move your legs toward your abdomen or into different positions, so anything restrictive — tight jeans, a belt — can get in the way, both physically and in terms of the feedback your body gives during the session. Think of what you’d wear to a yoga class or a gentle stretch session, and you’ll be set.
That really depends on what’s going on for you. Some people come for a single session — a tune-up, or relief from something specific — and feel that’s enough. Others come back regularly, especially if there’s an ongoing issue, because the body sometimes needs a little time and a few sessions to fully settle into balance. I usually recommend coming back within a week of your first session so we can see how your body has responded and decide together what’s next. If you’re not sure where you sit, I offer a free thirty-minute consultation where we can talk through what you’re experiencing and I can give you a personalised recommendation.
The easiest way to find out if this is right for you is the free consultation or simply book a session and enjoy receiving a 1 hour Ortho- Bionomy treatment to get a feel for what it’s like.
